Inthepipeline is a new recording school with a new outlook. Most similar learning facilities are built around a recording studio, or studios. Inthepipeline differs in that we recognise that many people would like to use their personal PC as their main recording facility at home. There is no doubt that a fully equipped studio would be most people's first choice if it were possible, but financial constraints do not usually allow this possibitlty and there are many attractions to having a constantly available recording setup in their own surroundings.

We do not insist that a client uses a particular brand of software, but it is of course important that all of our students use a program which has professional capabilities, is straightforward to use and realistically priced.
Our choice of recording software is Cockos Reaper. Reaper is
available in only one current version, which is constantly updated with
improvements and greater functionality. On
average there are between two and three updates every month. We always
make current updates available to our clients. Updates are provided at
no cost.
Reaper is available as an un-expiring shareware trial with no
limitations at no cost.
However it is not free, Cockos Incorperated simply allow the full use
of the product at no cost until clients are comfortable, in the
knowlege that they should obtain a licence.
Licences are available for commercial users at a price of $225 and non-commercial users at $50, roughly 25 pounds sterling. Cockos are able to make such a comprehensive recording software available at such a realistic proce because the software is not sold through distribution networks or retailers.

We strongly suggest that our students purchase a non commercial licence whilst they are learining about recording with inthepipeline.
Do not be fooled into thinking that REAPER is in any way inferior to such brand names as PROTOOLS or CUBASE. It is in use in many studios all over the world as a DAW software of choice. We choose Reaper because it enables us to ensure that all our students can learn using professional software without the major capital outlay associated with many programs. Reaper is also an excellent tuition software. It is easy to understand and fast to use.
At inthepipeline we believe that learning to get the best results from recordings should not be a process which involves spending a lot of time familiarizing our students with software. The time should be spent on understanding sound and recording as an art.
Even though there are certain technical aspects of the art which are important to understand, we seek to inform our students in a way which involves an absolute minimum of mathematics and a large amount of practical work and demonstration.
